From busy Bangkok to charming Chiang Mai

From busy Bangkok to charming Chiang Mai

Our visits to Vietnam & Cambodia were a very unique experience. It was a pretty good start of our South-East Asia adventure. But we were also curious about Thailand as we already heard a lot of it.

From Siem Reap we flew to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. When we arrived in this big city there was a smog alarm you could see the pollution in the air. So many people were wearing these masks and now we understand why. Our first two nights we spent in the BRB “Be Right Back” hostel. We did some exploring in the city but it was so hot, no wind and really smoggy, which made it unbearable .. We went to the MBK Shopping Center which is huge it has 7 floors, we visited the Wat Hua Lamphong temple and walked through Lumphini park. It was nice but too hot to enjoy being outside a lot.

After two days in Bangkok we flew all the way up to the North to Chiang Mai. Bed & Bike hostel was our next stay for four nights. In Chiang Mai we rented a scooter for one day and visited Mae Sa Waterfall, an impressive eight level waterfall, and stopped at Grand Canyon Waterpark to get some refreshment.

In Chiang Mai we also visited some night markets. We visited the Sunday night market that was huge there were stalls with food, clothes, jewellery, paintings, .. It was really fun. And we visited another one that was really cosy and had a lot of food stalls. When we left the night market there was this tree where you could leave a note.
These two night markets are definitely worth a visit when you are in Chiang Mai.

“This night market was awesome! Cheers Lauren and Bram from Belgium”

One of our most unique experience ever was the Jungle Elephant Sanctuary. It was difficult to choose one because there were so much choices so we first did some research on the internet and eventually we chose the Jungle Elephant Sanctuary they defend the policy of no riding and that was really important for both of us!

We don’t regret our choice at all it was such a special experience, elephants are so lovely. Let’s tell you more about that day. They picked us up early in the morning as we first had to drive for 2 and a half hours. It was a pretty long and bumpy ride but it was definitely worth it. This sanctuary is situated high up in the mountains in a valley. The location was beautiful. The elephants can run around free they are not put in a cage or on a chain. When we arrived the carers called the elephants and they ran down the mountains which was amazing to see. When they were down we could feed them bananas and sugar cane and they eat a lot! Elephants eat up to 300 kilograms a day and drink… That’s crazy, we didn’t know that before. After we fed them we had a delicious lunch. When we finished we made medicine for the elephants. The medicine contained dry rice, bananas, seeds. Normally elephants find there own medicine in the woods but because there are so many elephants there isn’t enough and that’s the reason they make these medicines. Everyone could give two pieces of medicine. When the elephants got there medicines it was time for a mud bath. Together we went in the mud bath and we could rub the elephant’s back with mud they really enjoyed it. It was so much fun! We were all dirty so after we swam in the waterfall. The elephants were playing in the water it was so cute to see. That day was so special for us. It was a unique experience that we will never forget!

From the North of Thailand we flew all the way down to the South.
In our next post we will tell you more about Phuket. Cheers guys!
