The Au Pair adventure had arrived. Our first actual dream came true because this was what we really wanted to do before we left. This was why we went to Jobstop to talk about being an au pair in Australia. They said that the chances were quite small to find a family as a couple. And now we are here staying with a lovely family in Gerringong until the end of March.
We met our Au Pair family through a Facebook page. We posted a message on different pages and got response from possible families. And there we met the family from Gerringong.
It all went very fast. The mother contacted us and a few days later we already moved in. We were very excited. We left or cozy, small studio in Coogee and took the bus and train to Gerringong. After two and a half hours on the train we arrived in this little town which was going to be our new home for the next 2 months.
We had a very warm welcome. You had mom, dad, 3 sons and 2 dogs. They have a boy from 9 years old and 2 boys from 13 years old. The dogs were called Indie and Raf. Indie is a Beaglier and Raf a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Rottweiler. We immediately felt comfortable with the family and fell in love with the dogs!
Au Pair is actually a good thing to do when you are very sociable and you want to save some extra money. Our main tasks are helping in the household, bring the youngest to school and help cooking. In return we get a room, food and some “pocket money”. Bram is also helping with renovating the house and for that he also gets paid. We also can use there car when it’s not in use which is very handy!
They give us very good tips about what we can do, where we can go, etc. If they can they will also go and see some beautiful things with you.
Apart from our Au Pair position we both also work part-time just to earn some more money to save.
At the moment I especially do cleaning and babysitting and Bram is doing gardening work.
We can actually conclude that we now have a really positive feeling about the Au Pair position.
It is certainly something you should consider even though it is not easy as a couple. But for a single person you have a large selection of families.
We are very lucky to live in with this family!
If you want more information about the Au Pair position you can always contact us.
We would love to tell you even more about it !
